Reaching Kravica Waterfalls

Kravica sits 40 to 45 kilometres south of Mostar — about an hour off the main road, more or less depending on which entrance you use and the time of year. From a transfer perspective, it is one of the more popular optional stops we run, particularly on Mostar-to-Dubrovnik or full Sarajevo-to-Dubrovnik bookings where the route already passes within a short detour of the falls.

This page covers the operational side: how the stop fits into a transfer, where the driver parks and waits, the walking distance from parking to the actual falls, what the swimming logistics look like in practice when you have an onward journey ahead of you, and what stop duration is realistic versus what people assume. If you are reading this to decide whether to add Kravica to a transfer booking, the short version is yes for May to September with at least 45 minutes set aside, and possible but lower-priority in the cold months.

Access & route mechanics

Where the road actually goes

Most of our Kravica stops happen as part of the Mostar-to-Dubrovnik or Mostar-to-Medjugorje transfer. From Mostar, the route runs south on the M-17 through the Neretva valley, then turns west at Capljina onto the local road that climbs to the Kravica entrance. The detour from the main M-17 highway is roughly 8 kilometres and adds 15 to 20 minutes each way, so a Kravica stop adds about 30 minutes of driving plus your time at the falls themselves.

From Sarajevo, the same approach applies, just with the longer Sarajevo-to-Mostar leg first. We almost never run Kravica as a standalone destination from Sarajevo because the round-trip drive (~340 km) eats most of the day for what is realistically a 45 to 90 minute attraction. Kravica works best when your transfer is already heading south.

The road to the entrance is paved, two-lane, and in good condition. There is no border crossing involved if you stay within Bosnia. If you are continuing to Dubrovnik or Split after Kravica, the Doljani/Metković crossing into Croatia is roughly 30 minutes further south.

During the stop

Parking, dropoff, waiting

There are two visitor entrances at Kravica with separate parking areas. We use the main upper entrance, which has a paved car park and a clear pedestrian path down to the falls. From the parking lot to the falls is a 5 to 10 minute walk downhill on a stone-paved track — easy for most adults, slower for guests with mobility limitations. The walk back up is the harder part; budget more time on the return than the descent.

Parking fees at the entrance are typically 3 to 6 BAM (around €1.50 to €3) for a passenger vehicle. The transfer price does not include the parking fee or the entrance fee at the falls themselves; both are paid at the entrance. Entrance fees run around €10 per person in summer (20 KM), sometimes lower in shoulder season. Cash is reliable; card may or may not be accepted depending on the day, so bring some KM or euros.

Your driver stays with the vehicle in the car park while you walk down to the falls. We do not leave guests stranded — the standard practice is the driver waits the full duration you are at the site, you message on WhatsApp when you are 5 minutes from being back at the car, and we are ready to roll when you arrive. Luggage stays in the locked vehicle the entire time. We do not recommend carrying suitcases down to the falls; they will slow you down and there is no left-luggage facility.

Realistic stop duration depends on what you intend to do. Photo stop only: 30 to 45 minutes including walk down and back. Add a swim and changing time: 60 to 90 minutes. We have run two-hour Kravica stops for guests who wanted a proper swim and a meal at the entrance restaurant, but two hours is the long end. If you tell us at booking, we plan onward arrival times accordingly.

Season & conditions

When to plan for this stop

Swimming season runs roughly May through September, with June to August being the actual warm months when most guests get in the water. The pools below the falls are spring-fed and stay cool even at peak summer — you will feel it the moment you step in. Bring water shoes if you have them; the rocky lakebed is grippy but uneven.

Changing facilities at the entrance are basic — a few cabins, no lockers. Most guests change in the cabins or at the car when leaving. We carry microfibre towels in summer for guests who forget, and we have a folded plastic mat in the boot so wet swimwear does not soak the seat or your luggage. If you plan to swim, pack swimwear and a towel in a small bag at the top of your suitcase rather than buried — saves time at the pickup.

Off-season (October to April) the falls are still impressive after rain — actually more dramatic in spring and autumn when water flow is highest — but obviously no swimming. The entrance complex operates shorter hours in winter (around 7am to 7pm) and the restaurant may be closed. Stop duration in cold months is realistically 30 to 45 minutes, photo stop only, and the descent path can be slippery after rain.

Peak summer weekends (July-August Saturdays and Sundays especially) see significant tour bus traffic. If you are sensitive to crowds, the early morning slot (8 to 10am) or late afternoon (after 5pm) are noticeably quieter than the midday window. Tell us at booking and we adjust the pickup time.

Common questions

Kravica Waterfalls transfer FAQ

Photo stop and walk: 30 to 45 minutes. Swim and changing: 60 to 90 minutes. Two hours if you want a proper swim plus lunch at the restaurant. Tell us your intent at booking and we set the schedule so you do not arrive in Dubrovnik later than expected.

Yes. The driver stays with the vehicle in the car park while you walk down to the falls. We do not leave. WhatsApp message when you are heading back up; we are ready when you arrive at the car. Luggage stays locked in the vehicle the whole time.

No. The Kravica entrance fee (around €10 per person in summer, sometimes lower off-season) and parking (3 to 6 BAM) are paid at the entrance gate, not as part of the transfer. Bring some KM or euros in cash; card acceptance varies.

Yes, in May to September. Pack swimwear and a towel near the top of your suitcase before pickup so you are not unpacking in a parking lot. Changing cabins are basic but functional. Water shoes help with the rocky lakebed. Plan 60 to 90 minutes for a proper swim with changing time.

5 to 10 minutes downhill on a stone-paved path. The walk back up is harder than the descent — budget extra time on the return. Not stroller-friendly. If you have mobility limitations, tell us at booking; we may suggest a shorter photo-only visit.

Possible but not efficient. Sarajevo-Kravica round trip is about 340 km and 5 hours of pure driving for what is a 45 to 90 minute stop at the falls. We almost never run this configuration. Kravica makes more sense as part of a Sarajevo-to-Mostar or Sarajevo-to-Dubrovnik transfer where you are already heading south.
