Mostar to Neum transfer
Neum is Bosnia and Herzegovina's only coastal town — a slender strip of Adriatic coastline pinched between two parts of Croatia. It sits between 65 and 80 kilometres south of Mostar depending on which route you take — coastal via the Neretva delta (faster) or inland via Hutovo (no border crossings). We run this transfer year-round, with peak demand from June through September when Bosnian families and regional holidaymakers use Neum as a calmer, cheaper alternative to the nearby Croatian coast.
Neum's existence as Bosnia's only sea access is a quirk of Ottoman-European diplomacy. When the Republic of Dubrovnik ceded the territory to the Ottomans in the 1699 Treaty of Karlowitz, it created a buffer strip preventing a shared border between Dubrovnik and Venice. That same strip — unchanged in shape ever since — is modern Bosnia's only exit to the Adriatic.
The town itself is modest: hotels terraced into the hillside above a series of small bays, a long seaside promenade, restaurants serving grilled fish from the Neretva delta and Herzegovinian lamb from the interior, and several small gravel and concrete beaches. Prices run significantly lower than Dubrovnik or Split, the crowd is a mix of Bosnian, regional Balkan, and Croat holiday visitors, and the pace is genuinely relaxed. Since the Pelješac Bridge opened in July 2022 — which lets Croatian traffic bypass Neum entirely between Split and Dubrovnik — the corridor has become quieter and more holiday-focused rather than transit-crowded.

PremiumWhat the road looks like
Two main routes from Mostar to Neum, and we let you pick at booking.
The faster is the coastal route on the M-17. We drop out of Mostar south through Čapljina, cross the lower Neretva valley — orchards of mandarins, figs, and pomegranates, plus rice paddies around the delta — and briefly transit Croatian territory at the Neretva delta near Metković before re-entering Bosnia at Neum. Total distance roughly 75 kilometres (give or take a few depending on exact endpoint), typically 75 to 90 minutes including short passport checks at each border crossing. Note: Croatia has been in the Schengen area since 1 January 2023, while Bosnia and Herzegovina is outside it, so these are real international crossings even if usually very fast.
The inland alternative goes from Mostar via Stolac, Hutovo, and the Hutovo Blato wetlands — entirely within Bosnia, no border crossings, about 80 kilometres and 100 minutes. Slower but useful for guests with non-EU passports, complex visa situations, or a general preference to avoid the double crossing. The inland route also passes Hutovo Blato Nature Park, a protected wetland reserve with significant birdlife — a worthwhile photo stop in spring and autumn migration seasons.
Regardless of route, the Adriatic appears ahead framed by arid Mediterranean karst hills as you approach Neum. The town's hotels line a series of small sheltered bays, and your driver takes you directly to your accommodation entrance.
What to expect
Pickup from any Mostar address, including the Stari Most old-town area (we stop at the nearest vehicle-accessible point since the Ottoman bridge zone is pedestrianised — see our Mostar hub for the three pickup zones we use). Drop-off at any Neum hotel, beach apartment, or private address.
Tell us at booking whether you prefer the coastal route (faster, brief Croatia transit) or the inland route (no border crossings, slower). We default to coastal unless you flag a reason to avoid the crossings — most guests find the coastal option simpler and the border checks routine.
The coastal route's Croatian section is brief: roughly 10 kilometres and 15 minutes between the two border points at Doljani/Metković on the north end and Klek on the south end. Croatia is Schengen since January 2023, so EU/Schengen passport holders rarely see more than a document glance. US, UK, Canadian, Australian, and most other nationalities are visa-free for Croatia but receive an entry stamp. Your driver knows which of the crossings tend to be fastest at which times and can switch to alternatives if one is backed up.
Payment in euros, Bosnian convertible marks (BAM), or by credit card. Neum itself accepts all three in practice since it serves a mixed Bosnian-Croatian-regional crowd, though BAM and euros are most common at the hotels.
The vehicle is a modern air-conditioned sedan for up to four passengers with luggage space for two large suitcases and two carry-on bags. For 5-7 passengers or heavier beach equipment (multiple suitcases, children's gear, snorkelling kit), request a minivan at booking — they have roughly double the trunk capacity.
Mostar to Neum FAQ
About 75 to 90 minutes via the coastal M-17 route (~75 km, briefly through Croatian territory), or about 100 minutes via the inland Hutovo alternative (~80 km, no border crossings). With a stop at Počitelj (highly recommended on either route), allow an additional 30 minutes.
Both exist as options. The direct coastal route does briefly transit Croatian territory at the Neretva delta — two quick border crossings, about 10 km / 15 minutes of Croatian road between them. Croatia is Schengen since January 2023 and Bosnia is not, so the crossings are real checks but usually very fast. The inland alternative via Hutovo is genuinely 100 per cent within Bosnia with no border stops.
It comes from the 1699 Treaty of Karlowitz. The Republic of Dubrovnik handed the Neum strip to the Ottoman Empire specifically to create a buffer preventing a direct border with the Republic of Venice. That strip has remained the same shape through four centuries and three empires, and today it is the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina's only outlet to the Adriatic.
Yes — modestly good. Neum has several pleasant small beaches, mostly gravel or concrete rather than sand, with clean water and sheltered bays. The town is significantly cheaper than Dubrovnik (40 km south) or the Makarska Riviera (1-2 hours north). It is popular with Bosnian, Serbian, and regional holidaymakers, and since the Pelješac Bridge opened in July 2022 it has been noticeably less congested with Croatian transit traffic.
The price covers the vehicle, driver, and fuel for up to four passengers one-way on the coastal route. It is a per-vehicle price, not per person. The inland route is the same price by default. Border crossing fees (minimal) are included. A Počitelj stop adds EUR 25. Minivan upgrade and waiting time are priced separately on request.
Yes. The short distance makes Neum a realistic day beach trip from Mostar. We offer round-trip pricing with waiting time — most guests ask for a 4-6 hour beach window, which is enough for a swim, a long lunch with a sea view, and an unhurried return before evening. Ask for a round-trip quote at booking.
