About this route

Sarajevo to Dubrovnik transfer

Sarajevo to Dubrovnik is our top cross-border route and the one where local knowledge pays off the most. 270 kilometres, crosses the Bosnia-Croatia border at Metkovic-Doljani, ends at the Dubrovnik Old Town walls. Most of our drivers have done this route 500+ times. They know which hour of which day the border jams, which service station has the quickest coffee turnaround, and which Dubrovnik drop-off point saves you the most walking.

The direct run is 4 hours 30 minutes. Most guests add stops: Mostar (Stari Most bridge, 1-2 hours; pickup mechanics on our Mostar transfer hub), Pocitelj (fortified medieval village on a hillside, 30 min), and Kravica waterfalls (25-metre horseshoe cascade on the Trebizat, 45 min to an hour). All three turn a coastal transfer into a proper Herzegovina day — 6.5 hours door-to-door but you see more than most package tours. The full three-stop option is what most of our bookings choose.

We are honest about what we are: Sarajevo-based, not Dubrovnik-local. This route runs us out of home territory after about 200 km. Practically that means we are fast and well-informed on the Bosnian half, competitive on the Croatian coastal stretch, and we do not do Dubrovnik-city airport meet-and-greet or local city runs — for those, book a Dubrovnik driver. What we do well is the full transfer from your Sarajevo hotel to your Dubrovnik accommodation with border paperwork handled.

The drive

What the road looks like

The first part of the drive is our Sarajevo to Mostar route — M-17 southwest over Ivan Sedlo pass at 960 metres, down through the Neretva canyon, 2 hours 15 minutes to Mostar. That is the stretch we know from daily operations. South of Mostar the landscape shifts quickly: limestone karst, olive groves, Mediterranean light. If you are adding Pocitelj and Kravice, we loop east off the main road for 25 km on decent secondary road before rejoining the main southbound route.

The Bosnia-Croatia border at Metkovic-Doljani is where we earn our fee. Normal crossing is 10-15 minutes. Summer Friday afternoon (2-6 pm) can hit 45 minutes; July and August weekends are the worst. We know which lane moves faster, when to switch, and whether it is worth the alternative crossing further south (usually not, but we check before committing). Passport check on both sides, no customs search for private cars with two or three passengers.

Once across, you are on the Croatian coastal road with Adriatic views through tunnel gaps. The final 30 km are scenic. Dubrovnik Old Town is strictly pedestrian, so we drop at Pile Gate (western main entrance, 2 minutes to Stradun) or Ploce Gate (eastern end, better for accommodations in Ploce district), or direct to hotels in Lapad, Gruz, or Babin Kuk. If your host is inside the walls, tell us the nearest gate and we hand-carry luggage to the door.

Practical info

What to expect

All passengers need a passport. EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens can use a national ID card. US, UK, Canadian, Australian, and most European nationalities do not need a Croatia visa (90-day Schengen rules apply). Bring the document you booked with — the driver glances at names at pickup but Croatian border officers sometimes cross-check against the manifest.

Pickup is from any Sarajevo address, arriving at your door. For the optional stops the driver manages parking and wait times. Kravica has a small entrance fee (around EUR 10 per person in summer, lower in shoulder season) not included in the transfer price; see the Kravica stop page for parking, walking distance, and swimming logistics. Count on EUR 10-12 per person for a decent lunch if you break in Mostar. Our drivers carry spare euros for small operational expenses but do not cover guest entrance fees.

Standard vehicle is an air-conditioned sedan for up to four passengers with full luggage (two large suitcases, two carry-ons). For five to seven people we switch to a minivan (Mercedes V-Class or equivalent) at a supplement. Dubrovnik Old Town has strict traffic restrictions — no cars inside the walls. We drop at Pile or Ploce gate (both within a 2-minute walk of the pedestrian zone). For Lapad, Babin Kuk, or Gruz we drive directly to the door. Best to ViberWhatsApp your Dubrovnik host 10 minutes before arrival; most Dubrovnik hosts expect this and respond fast.

Common questions

Sarajevo to Dubrovnik FAQ

Yes. All passengers must have a valid passport. EU/EEA/Swiss citizens can use a national ID card. Bring the document you booked with — border officers sometimes cross-check names against the manifest. Most nationalities (US, UK, Canada, Australia, EU) enter Croatia visa-free for up to 90 days.

Normal: 10-15 minutes at Metkovic-Doljani. Summer Friday afternoons and July-August weekends can hit 45 minutes. We track the queue and adjust our departure window when we expect jams. We have never missed a ferry or flight connection due to border delay in our operational history.

Yes, and this is what most guests choose. Total door-to-door with all three stops: about 6 to 6.5 hours. Mostar gets 1-2 hours, Pocitelj 30 minutes, Kravice 45-60 minutes. That leaves room for a proper lunch break and still gets you to Dubrovnik by early evening. If you want to swim at Kravice, we allow an extra 30 minutes in summer — tell us at booking.

May-June and September-October are our favourites — mild weather, green canyon, short border queues. July-August is peak with long borders and crowded Mostar; still beautiful, just allow extra time. November-March is quiet off-season; Kravice water flow is strongest in early spring. We run the route year-round.

Depends on your accommodation. Old Town (inside walls): Pile Gate (western, main entrance, 2-min walk from Stradun) or Ploce Gate (eastern, closer to Old Port and Ploce district). Lapad, Babin Kuk, Gruz: direct door-to-door, we know the routes. Tell us the exact address at booking; we plan drop accordingly.

Luggage stays in the locked vehicle with the driver while you visit Kravice or any other stop. Bring only what you need for the visit — camera, swimwear in summer, comfortable shoes. The walk from the car park to the falls is an easy 10-minute downhill path.
