About this route

Sarajevo to Split transfer

Sarajevo to Split is one of our cross-border routes that splits into two halves with very different driving character. The first half is the same Sarajevo-to-Mostar drive we know by heart — M-17 over Ivan Sedlo pass and down through the Neretva canyon, 2 hours 15 minutes to Mostar. The second half heads west across the Croatian border at Bijača into Dalmatia and finishes at Split's waterfront. Total pickup-to-drop runs 4 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours 15 minutes depending on border processing.

We get most of these bookings as airport-to-coast continuations or the reverse — guests landing in Sarajevo and starting their Adriatic week in Split, or finishing their Bosnia visit before catching a Split flight or ferry. The Bijača border crossing is much quieter than Doljani (the Mostar-Dubrovnik crossing); summer queues that strangle the Dubrovnik route rarely show up at Bijača.

This page covers the operational side: the Bosnian half driven through the Neretva canyon, the border mechanics at Bijača, the Dalmatian-hinterland descent through Imotski, and the realities of dropping off in Split where the Old Town inside Diocletian's Palace is fully pedestrian.

What the road looks like

We leave Sarajevo on the M-17 southwest, climbing over Ivan Sedlo at 960 metres and dropping into the Neretva canyon — the same scenery our regular Sarajevo-Mostar guests know. Konjic appears at 60 kilometres, Jablanica at 90 kilometres, Mostar at 130 kilometres. This stretch is two-lane road throughout, scenic but not fast. Allow 2 hours 15 minutes pickup-to-Mostar in normal conditions; we can stop briefly for photos along the canyon if guests want.

South of Mostar the route diverges from the Dubrovnik road. We continue west on the M-17 toward Čapljina, then turn northwest at the Bijača-Kamensko border crossing into Croatia. Bijača is a low-traffic border post (most cross-border traffic uses Doljani further south); typical processing is 10-20 minutes, even in summer peak. EU EES has been live since April 2026, so non-EU/EEA passengers add 10-15 minutes for biometric registration on first Croatia entry only.

Once in Croatia, the road climbs through the Dalmatian hinterland and passes Imotski (the town above the Blue and Red Lakes — striking sinkholes about 5 km off-route if you want a 30-minute detour). The descent from Imotski to Split is a series of switchbacks down to the coast, with the Adriatic and the Brač and Hvar islands appearing about 30 km out. Final approach into Split takes you along the waterfront ring road; we exit at the appropriate point for your accommodation.

Practical info

What to expect

Pickup from any Sarajevo address. We confirm exact time by WhatsApp the evening before. Most guests book this route as a morning departure (07:00-09:00) to arrive in Split by mid-afternoon for hotel check-in or evening ferry to the islands.

One international border (BiH-Croatia at Bijača). Passports for everyone. EU/EEA citizens can use national ID cards for the Croatian side. Croatia is Schengen since January 2023; EU EES adds 10-15 minutes on first crossing for non-EU/EEA passengers (subsequent entries fast).

Sedan handles 4 passengers with full luggage. For 5-7 passengers, request a minivan at booking. Mostar stop (30 min, +€25) and Konjic stop (30 min, +€25) are popular optional add-ons — Mostar particularly because guests often want a Stari Most photo stop without committing to overnight. See our Mostar transfer hub for pickup-zone specifics if you want to spend longer in Mostar.

Split dropoff. The Old Town inside Diocletian's Palace is pedestrian-only — no vehicle access through the four ancient gates. We drop at the nearest accessible point: typically Riva promenade entrance (south side, ferry-port side), Srebrena Vrata (eastern gate access), or your hotel directly if outside the Palace walls (most modern hotels in Bačvice or the airport zone are direct lobby drop). The driver helps with luggage to the gate.

Common questions

Sarajevo to Split FAQ

4 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours 15 minutes pickup-to-drop. The border at Bijača is normally fast (10-20 min); EU EES adds 10-15 min for non-EU/EEA passengers on first Croatia entry. Add 30-60 min if you take a Mostar or Imotski stop.

Bijača-Kamensko, the standard Mostar-Split crossing. It is much quieter than Doljani (the Mostar-Dubrovnik crossing) and rarely backs up even in summer. Your driver handles all the paperwork; you stay in the vehicle and present passports.

Yes — Mostar is right on the route at the halfway point. 30-minute photo stop at Stari Most is +€25 and adds the same to drive time. Some guests do a full 1.5-2 hour Mostar lunch stop, which works fine but pushes Split arrival later. Tell us the duration you want at booking; we set the pickup time accordingly.

Old Town inside Diocletian's Palace is pedestrian-only, so vehicle drop is at one of the four gates: Riva promenade for southern Palace entries, Srebrena Vrata for eastern entries, or the nearest accessible street to your specific address. Hotels outside the Palace walls (Bačvice, ferry port area, airport zone) get direct lobby drop. Driver helps with luggage to the gate.

Yes, same fixed price. Tell us at booking. Split Airport is 25 km west of the city centre; door-to-airport timing is similar to door-to-city. If you have a flight to catch, we build standard 2-hour pre-flight buffer into the pickup schedule.

If you are interested in karst landscape, yes — the Blue Lake is a 5-kilometre detour from the main route, 30-45 minutes for a viewpoint stop. If you are tight on time or focused on Split arrival, skip it. We can stop on the return leg if you book a round-trip and want to see it without the outbound delay.
